Tally + Naarvin: three ways to read Tally Prime and ERP 9

How Naarvin reads Tally Prime and Tally.ERP 9 from your office: the three routes in, what it reads from ledgers, vouchers and bills, and what to check first.

In short

Naarvin reads Tally Prime and Tally.ERP 9 without you opening Tally's XML port to the internet. It reaches Tally through an HTTPS address you protect with a password, through Tally XML exports in an SFTP folder, or through a small Naarvin agent in your office that only connects out. It reads ledgers, vouchers, opening balances and bill-wise details, and only reads.

What does Naarvin read from Tally?

How Tally data lands in Naarvin
In TallyIn Naarvin
CompanyA company, in the currency and country you enter on the connection
Groups and ledgersThe chart of accounts, typed by the Tally group each ledger sits under
VouchersJournals, with narration, reference and who entered them; cancelled and optional vouchers are left out
Opening balancesOne opening journal on the day the books begin
Sundry Debtors and Sundry CreditorsCustomers and suppliers, with e-mail, phone and tax number where Tally holds them
Bill-wise detailsOpen invoices and bills: a New Ref opens a bill, an Agst Ref settles it, On Account is an advance; the due date follows the credit period

The connection reads no account codes from Tally, so the account mapping works from ledger names and groups. A ledger under a custom top-level group is typed from the group's own settings where it can be, and otherwise loaded as an other asset with a warning, so check the mapping after the first sync.

How does Naarvin reach Tally in your office?

Naarvin never asks you to open Tally's XML port to the internet. You choose one of three routes on the connection:

  • An HTTPS address you expose: a reverse proxy or tunnel, protected with a password, that forwards to Tally's XML port. Tally must be running with the company open when a sync runs. Naarvin sends export requests only, never an import.
  • Tally XML exports in an SFTP folder: you export the masters and the day book from Tally as XML into a folder Naarvin reads over SFTP, with the server's key fingerprint pinned.
  • The Naarvin agent: a small program on a computer in your office that reaches Tally, or a folder of its exports, on your network and connects out to Naarvin over HTTPS. No inbound port is opened, and Tally's address stays in the agent's own config file. It can serve several Tally companies. The agent is new: try it on a copy first.

How do you connect Tally?

  1. Pick the routeHTTPS address, SFTP folder or the Naarvin agent, depending on what your office can run.
  2. Set up that routeThe proxy or tunnel with its sign-in, the SFTP folder with its user and key, or the agent on an office computer.
  3. Name the company, currency and countryThe company exactly as Tally shows it, its three-letter currency code (for example SAR) and two-letter country.
  4. Save, then link the companyLink it to a company in Naarvin in the same currency. For the agent, register it on the connection card after saving.
  5. Confirm the account mappingPay attention to ledgers under custom groups.

Credentials for the address or folder are encrypted when saved and never shown again. Our team does these steps with you during onboarding.

How often does it sync?

On the schedule you set, or on demand. Naarvin finds no change log it can follow in Tally, so every sync reads the whole company, asking for vouchers a month at a time. Because each read is complete, a voucher deleted in Tally is marked deleted in Naarvin at the next sync.

What should you check before relying on it?

  • Ledgers kept without bill-wise details bring no open items, so receivables and payables aging needs bill-wise details switched on in Tally, or a file import.
  • The fields Naarvin reads for tax numbers and for who entered a voucher should be checked on the first sync.
  • Naarvin does not write to Tally. Approved journals are exported as a CSV file, one row per line, to enter in Tally.
  • The connector is built and is checked in a first sync with your own company before you rely on it. Compare the first month with a trial balance from Tally.

Questions people ask

Do we have to open a port on our office firewall?

Not with the Naarvin agent, which only connects out. The HTTPS address route needs an address reachable from the internet, protected with a password, in front of Tally, and the SFTP route needs an SFTP server Naarvin can reach.

Does Tally have to be running for a sync?

For the HTTPS address and for the agent reading Tally directly, yes, with the company open. With XML exports in a folder, Naarvin reads the files, so Tally can be closed.

Why do we enter the currency ourselves?

The connection does not read an ISO currency code from Tally, so you name it once, for example SAR. It must match the company's currency in Naarvin.
