Input VAT is the VAT a business pays on its purchases and imports. A VAT-registered business can usually deduct it from the output VAT it charges on sales, and pays the tax authority only the difference. In Saudi Arabia the deduction needs evidence such as a valid tax invoice, and some purchases are blocked from deduction.
What is input VAT?
VAT is charged at each stage of a supply chain. When a business buys goods or services, the supplier charges it VAT: that is input VAT. When the business sells, it charges its customer VAT: that is output VAT. On the VAT return, input VAT is deducted from output VAT, so each business pays VAT only on the value it adds.
In Saudi Arabia the standard rate is 15%, in force since 1 July 2020. In the UAE the standard rate is 5%.

What does an input VAT calculation look like?
Why does input VAT matter for GCC finance teams?
Input VAT is cash: a missed deduction is VAT the business could have recovered. Check each supplier's VAT number and tax invoice when the bill is captured, ideally in the three-way match, and reconcile the input VAT account in the trial balance to the return every period; the guide to VAT returns in Saudi Arabia and the UAE covers the full return.
In the UAE, from 1 January 2026 the Federal Tax Authority can deny input tax deduction where it finds that the supply is part of a tax-evasion arrangement (Federal Decree-Law No. 16 of 2025).
