Dynamics 365 Finance + Naarvin: legal entities, read only

How Naarvin reads Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations: the Entra app it signs in with, the ledger entity your partner publishes, and what it reads.

In short

Naarvin reads Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations service to service, through an app you register in your own Microsoft Entra tenant. Each legal entity becomes a company with its main accounts, customers, vendors and posted ledger lines. Posted ledger lines need an entity your partner publishes first, and open customer and vendor items are not available, so the aging comes from a file import.

What does Naarvin read from Finance and Operations?

  • Legal entities, each a company in Naarvin, with the accounting currency and chart of accounts of its ledger.
  • The main accounts of that chart.
  • Customers and vendors, with VAT number, e-mail, phone and country.
  • Posted general-ledger lines on the current posting layer, grouped into one journal per voucher and accounting date, with transaction-currency amounts kept beside the accounting-currency ones.

A voucher with a line on a main account that is not in the chart is left out whole, never loaded unbalanced, and the sync says how many. Lines on the operations or tax posting layers are left out and counted too.

What has to be in place before connecting?

Finance and Operations does not offer Naarvin its posted ledger lines out of the box. Your partner publishes a read-only entity with the fields of the general journal account entry and gives it a public collection name; GeneralJournalAccountEntries is the default Naarvin looks for. Naarvin checks the entity exists when the connection is tested, so a missing one is found before the first sync.

Open customer and vendor transactions are not available to Naarvin either, so this connection brings no receivables or payables aging. Bring open items in with the Excel and CSV import; each sync reminds you.

How do you connect it?

  1. Register an app in Microsoft EntraIn your own tenant, with a client secret. No Naarvin-wide app is involved.
  2. Add the app in Finance and OperationsUnder System administration, Setup, Microsoft Entra applications, mapped to a user with read-only finance access.
  3. Have your partner publish the ledger line entityRead-only, with the public collection name you will enter in Naarvin.
  4. Enter the connection in NaarvinThe environment address on dynamics.com, the Entra tenant, the client ID and secret, and the collection name if it is not the default. The secret is encrypted when saved and never shown again.
  5. Choose the legal entitiesLink each to a company in Naarvin in the same currency, then confirm the account mapping.

Our team does these steps with you and your partner during onboarding.

How does it sync, and how do journals get back?

Syncs run on the schedule you set, from every 15 minutes to once a week, or on demand. The first reads every posted line. Later syncs re-read from the first day of the month before the last sync, so lines removed or reversed inside that window are marked deleted.

Naarvin does not write to Finance and Operations. Approved journals are exported as a CSV file, one row per line, for your own journal import, and recorded in Naarvin with the reference you post them under.

What should you check in the first sync?

The connector is built and is checked in a first sync with your own legal entities before you rely on it. Three things deserve a close look, because they are not in Microsoft's public documentation: the collection names other than the customer one, the company filter on the published line entity, and the main account taken as the first segment of each ledger account. Compare the first month with a trial balance from Finance and Operations, then build group figures in Reporting AI.

Questions people ask

Is this the same connection as Business Central?

No. Business Central has its own connection, with a Microsoft sign-in and journals sent back as unposted lines. This one is for Finance and Operations and only reads.

Why do we need our partner?

Posted ledger lines are not available to Naarvin until an entity for them is published. Your partner publishes it read-only, and Naarvin checks for it when the connection is tested.

Where does the receivables and payables aging come from?

From a file import of open items. This connection reads the ledger, accounts and parties, but no open customer or vendor transactions.
