FP&A, financial planning and analysis, is the part of a finance team that plans the company's future results and explains its current ones. It owns the budget, the forecasts, variance analysis and scenario modelling, and turns them into advice for management on where to spend, hire and invest.
What is FP&A?
Accounting records what happened and reports it under the standards. FP&A looks forward and asks what it means: whether the year will land where the board expects, what drives any gap, and what happens if prices, costs or hiring change. In a small company the CFO or finance manager does this work; larger companies have a dedicated FP&A team.
FP&A runs on the books. It starts from closed actuals in the general ledger, so a slow or unreliable close delays every forecast that follows.
What does an FP&A team do?
| Activity | What it produces | How often |
|---|---|---|
| Budgeting | The annual plan by company, team and month | Once a year |
| Forecasting | Rolling and full-year forecasts | Monthly or quarterly |
| Variance analysis | Budget vs actual, with the reasons | Monthly |
| Scenario planning | The effect of price, cost, hiring or financing changes | When decisions arise |
| KPI reporting | Margins, cash conversion and unit economics | Monthly |
| Decision support | Business cases for hiring, capital spending, pricing and deals | As needed |
The core loop is plan, compare, explain and re-forecast: a rolling forecast updated after each close, and budget vs actual to show where results differ and why.
What does FP&A work look like in practice?
Why does FP&A matter for finance teams in the GCC?
For a group with several companies, FP&A is where the numbers come together: plans by company, translated into one reporting currency, with sales between group companies removed so the group total is not counted twice. See consolidated financial statements.
The usual constraint is time. When analysts spend most of the month collecting data and fixing account mappings, little is left for analysis. Automating data collection and the routine comparisons gives that time back for the questions management actually asks.
Questions people ask
What is the difference between FP&A and accounting?
Accounting records transactions, closes the books and prepares financial statements under the standards. FP&A uses those results to plan, forecast and advise. Each depends on the other: FP&A is only as good as the closed numbers it starts from.
What tools does FP&A use?
Spreadsheets, planning software and the ERP's reports are all common. The tool matters less than having one set of actuals, clear drivers and a forecast that can be updated quickly.
Who does FP&A report to?
Usually to the CFO. In a smaller company, the finance manager covers FP&A alongside accounting.
